On September 27, 2017, Salt Lake County officials unveiled Gordon’s glass art installation for the new $65.4 million Downtown DA’s Office Building located at East 500 South Main Street in Salt Lake City.
The installation, “Words We Live By,” creates a strong visual identity for the Salt Lake County Downtown District Attorney’s Office Building and reflects the District Attorney’s progressive, collaborative and community-oriented approach. The artist worked closely with all stakeholders to arrive at a final design that is beautiful, elegant and distinctive while embodying the DA’s mission and goals.
Gordon approached the District Attorney’s Office Building’s glass façade as a “canvas,” integrating the artwork directly into the different architectural elements of the building. Color choices are meant to pay homage to the Great Salt Lake and give the display a sense of place. Visible from both the exterior and interior of the building, Huether’s installation considers the function of the building’s interior spaces, creating a beautiful pattern of light and color throughout office workspaces.
Gordon Huether was selected through an open public art call, competing with three other artists in the finalist round. The project architect for the building is the local firm MHTN Architects.
