Gordon Huether Selected to Design Public Artwork for Veteran’s Memorial Park in Carlsbad, CA

Gordon Huether has been selected to design the public art for the upcoming Veterans Memorial Park in Carlsbad, CA. An advisory committee, comprising Carlsbad veterans, their family members, an arts professional, and two members of the city’s Arts Commission, awarded him the commission following a public presentation at the Public Art Advisory Subcommittee meeting on June 12, 2024. The city received 35 qualified submissions through a national call for artists, eventually narrowing the field to four finalists, with Gordon’s proposal emerging as the winner.

In his presentation, Gordon highlighted the importance of community collaboration to create a piece that connects people and place. He stated, “My approach to public art is to establish a ‘narrative of place,’ conveying the history, spirit, and culture of its community: past, present, and future. I conduct intensive research into the shared values and history of the people who will experience the artwork daily, collecting on-site feedback from community members, project stakeholders, and civic leaders. This is essential in creating expressive and accessible artwork that encourages its audience to see their presence in the final product and share in the pride of a community experience. I will apply the same approach to this meaningful project.”

Carlsbad, located between San Diego and Los Angeles, has a longstanding commitment to arts and culture, which is integral to its identity.

Gordon is enthusiastic about the opportunity to create a space that honors veterans amid the beauty of nature, fostering expression and understanding.
