Gordon Huether is privileged to be selected as one of four finalists by the City of Carlsbad’s Library & Cultural Arts Department to design a site-specific memorial artwork for Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Carlsbad, often referred to as a “village by the sea,” takes pride in its small coastal town ambiance. Situated between San Diego and Los Angeles, the city has a longstanding commitment to arts and culture, integral to its identity.
The Veteran’s Memorial Park is a unique blend of park and memorial, embodying multiple historical narratives while seamlessly integrating with the natural landscape.
This memorial art project will transcend a singular perspective, encompassing individuals, histories, and nature. It aims to engage every visitor as a participant rather than a mere observer.
Gordon is enthusiastic about having the opportunity to craft a space where veterans are honored amid the splendor of nature, fostering expression and understanding. It will serve as a vital nexus between land and people, bridging generations, fostering community cohesion, and honoring the past while embracing the present. Gordon’s objective is to create a genuinely public space that caters to the diverse needs and aspirations of the community, veterans, and their families.
