The Ring was designed for the Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park as part of a nationwide call to artists process. Gordon was selected to develop a site-integrated artwork as part of the city’s master plan of a family-oriented park that honors and evokes the spirit of those who have served our country. In addition to creating a memorial befitting its veterans, the city of Carlsbad placed an emphasis on designing an artwork that harmonizes with the sensitive habitat lands that surround the sculpture site.

Gordon developed several designs and forms – an archway, a ring and a series of spires – each evocative of the values shared amongst veterans who have served in the various branches of the United States Armed Forces. The Ring was selected for its quality of creating an intimate and contemplative space for visitors to engage with the artwork and the site itself.

The continuous circular form of The Ring symbolizes the enduring values of courage, duty, honor, integrity, service and respect that are central to the Armed Forces. Forged from durable weathering steel, the sculpture forms a stately portal that invites viewers to engage in a sacred moment of pause, where past, present and future unite in a quiet reverence. Corten steel was selected for its quality of developing a rust-like patina that will further harmonize with the sculpture’s surroundings. From its position above the serene landscape of Carlsbad’s Veterans Memorial Park, The Ring frames the scenic hills of Carlsbad and the Pacific Ocean beyond. Coupled with this stunning vista, the sculpture is a fitting memorial and tribute to the service and sacrifice of those who have dedicated their lives to the service of our nation and its citizens.
