Flower Power - Anchorage Transfer Station - Proposed Project | Anchorage, AK | Dichroic Glass, Corten Steel | 9' to 12'H x 4'W
Flower Power embraces the idea of Mother Nature meeting adaptive reuse of recycled materials. The proposed concept uses approximately 80% recycled materials.
The installation is comprised of four stylized flowers inspired by native flowers of Alaska, which will activate each of the four identified sites. The flowers will be approximately 9, 10, 11 and 12 feet tall. The blossom of each flower will be made of Corten recycled steel with dichroic glass inserts. The center of each blossom will have a stylized, laser cut symbol — one each for earth, water, fire, and air, representing the four primary elements of nature.
Dichroic glass is a high-tech material that is intensely colorful, passively kinetic (it changes color depending on one’s angle of viewing), and is very light responsive, day or night. As the angle of the sun (or other light source) changes, the glass changes to beautiful hues of blue, pink, green, and more colors which are also reflected on nearby surfaces. The plan for this artwork is to procure the materials from local salvage companies.
Flower Power directly responds to the theme of land stewardship and is a metaphor for transforming waste into beauty. These gigantic flowers will add a touch of whimsy and delight for all to experience as they drive by.
