End of Watch Memorial – San Jose Police

End of Watch Memorial | San Jose, CA | Dichroic Glass, Steel | 8’ Diameter x 5” Depth | 2023

The City of San Jose commissioned Gordon to design the End of Watch Police Memorial to honor and memorialize San Jose Police Officers who have lost their lives in service to the public. The memorial features a seven-pointed police badge with an overlaid black metal band, a symbol often used by law enforcement to symbolize the death of an officer. The badge is eight feet in diameter and fabricated with dichroic glass, a glass that displays multiple different colors depending on lighting conditions and viewing angles. The work is enclosed in glass and mounted in a metal frame on a concrete plinth. Each fallen officer will be recognized on an individual plaque around the base of the memorial, which provides space for adding tributes in the future.

Project goals included creating an accessible and welcoming space and a destination where police officers and police personnel, family members, and the community can honor the sacrifice made by fallen officers. The seven points of the Memorial badge symbolize the seven core values of the San Jose Police Department: integrity, service, courage, innovation, respect, excellence, and diversity. Gordon’s design is intended to express the department’s mission to convey protection, peace, enforcement and community. End of Watch is also a reminder of the ever-present risks associated with law enforcement and is a place for the public to offer expressions of appreciation, sympathy and grief if other deaths occur in the future.

The End of Watch Memorial is sited in an exterior public area of the City’s existing Police Administration Building (PAB). Ceremonies and annual memorial events are planned to take place at the site.
